Adorable Ceramic Animals Look Like Storybook Characters

Nastia Calaca says that she always dreamed about becoming a children’s book illustrator.

When she was young, she couldn’t get enough of the stories that transported her into fantasy worlds and far-off places.

After trying her hand at the idea for a while, Calaca decided to give ceramics a try in 2015.

She discovered that she had a natural talent for the art form, which led her to combine her first love with a growing second one.

It didn’t take long for her to start creating the physical iterations of the different storybook characters she loves.

You’ll find adorable puppies, loving hippos, startled anteaters, and much more in her ever-growing collection.

Calaca describes her creations as being “derpy animals.”

The Painting Work Is Arguably Better Than the Ceramics

Calaca takes her whimsical creatures to the next level with the painting work she puts into each piece.

Each tiny brushstroke imparts a realistic element to the character.

It looks like each animal belongs in real life.

When Calaca takes pictures of them for her online store, she often gives them the backdrop of a children’s book to make them even more realistic.

She uses a tight color palette to ensure consistency with each item.

Instead of creating smooth pieces, Calaca opts for bumpy textures that match the various scales, curves, or fur that each animal displays.

Once you get past the initial impression, you’ll find that every inch of each piece features love and care at its core to create the perfect display.

Even the facial expressions provide a personality aura that you don’t find in the ceramics’ world.

Calaca says that she is open for commissions for her derpy animals.

If you shop from her online store, worldwide delivery is possible.

It may take up to 4-6 weeks to receive the item depending on where you currently live.

Her latest collection involves several reptiles, including a devious toad, a chameleon, a rabbit, and even a teapot.

All of them are worth grabbing for your personal collection!
