Spider Fabrics by Mister Finch

If You Hate Spiders, Don’t Read This Post

Mister Finch works in Leeds. His reputation as an artist is both whimsical and unnerving. He certainly gets applause for recycling unwanted textiles and fabric scrap, but the outcomes are not something that everyone will love.

Unless it is Halloween or you love spiders, Mister Finch’s creations may not be for you. He creates oversized spiders from cotton and brocades. Once the work is finished, he attaches the pieces to his ceiling to take photographs.

You can also find them scaling his workshop wall on his Instagram feed.

Creatures Have Always Held a Fascination for Mister Finch

Over the past few years, Mister Finch has transformed his creature-based work so that many of them stand up when completed.

If they cannot accomplish this outcome independently, he’ll attach bases to them to achieve the feat.

“I love the way this looks,”

the artist writes.

“It enables me to dress and humanize them, which is something I’ve always wanted to do.”

Is it even possible to humanize giant spiders that stick to your ceiling?

Mister Finch used to create massive textile sculptures from his studio. He says that he’s been scaling the sizes down in recent years to make them more accessible to the public.

That means you’ll find something closer to a tarantula waiting for you in your shipment instead of a spider the size of a human. Some items are even more extensive, coming in roughly at the same size as a person’s head.

The Pandemic Created Resource Challenges for the Artist

One of the joys that artists have when using recycled materials involves foraging for new inventory. With the ongoing pandemic limiting when and where Mister Finch can operate, he says that he’s been pulling textiles for his work from his personal stash.

He also mentions that he’s been visiting some of the local markets and fairs to pick up some textiles from other local artists.

In addition to the spiders and other creatures in his portfolio, Mister Finch has released two books that feature his work in different realistic settings. He’s currently working on the third title right now.

You can purchase all of these items, including the textile spiders, through his online store.
