The Crocheted Guitar
Vasconcelos focuses on covering electric guitars with colorful wool, using crochet knots to produce flowery shapes and brilliant designs.
The instrument remains workable because her wraps work underneath the strings without interfering with the pickups.
Her design for the classical Fender Stratocaster six-string electric guitar includes a green wool thread.
It works its way up the bridge until offering a few more colorful flowers by the string tuners.
The effect creates visual webbing that takes people back to the days of the 1960s.
It also seems like this Portuguese artist is taking some energy from the Grateful Dead to produce such creativity.
Vasconcelos Auctions Off Her Artwork
Although Vasconcelos sells some pieces directly, many of her items head to auction.
For the part involving the Fender Stratocaster, she had the item sold through The Big Art Auction, a collaborative event hosted by Creative Giants and The Big Issue Group.
All proceeds from the sales of Vasconcelos’ items, and that of other artists and contributors, was donated to The Big Issue.
The Big Issue is a UK-based organization that works hard to create new economic opportunities for the socioeconomically disadvantaged.
Born in Lisbon in 1971, Vasconcelos has been a regular exhibitor since the 1990s.
She became an internationally known name in 2005 after her participation in the 2005 Venice Biennale.
Vasconcelos is the first woman and the youngest artist to have her work displayed as an exhibit at the Palace of Versailles, which was an achievement she earned in 2012.
Her work has also had the honor of having a solo exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.
The complete list of solo projects and exhibitions is too numerous to name. In 2020 alone, she was featured in Boston and West Bretton.
During the previous year, you could catch her items in Porto and Strasbourg.
Her work is also featured in numerous magazines and publications.
