One Crazy Festival
That didn’t stop people from attending the iconic Burning Man festival.
Even though it was hot, the heat seemed to create even more craziness than usual.
Burning Man takes place during the last week of August each year in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada.
You can find it about 100 miles northwest of Reno.
The event takes its name from the symbolic ritual of burning a giant effigy on Saturday evening.
It is officially an experiment in art and community.
There are ten critical principles that fuel the festival, ranging from civic responsibility to radical self-reliance.
The first Burning Man happened in 1986 in San Francisco.
It was a small function organized by Larry Harvey and Jerry James at Baker Beach.
Gigantic sculptures were part of the 2019 festival with human portraits the primary emphasis in each piece.
There are extreme levels of creativity all around.
Wild fashion combines with incredible displays across the desert to create one-of-a-kind experiences.
One of the standout pieces was a giant face in the desert.
There was a three-story maze inside for people to navigate.
Mirrored sculptures and steampunk creations were also part of the experience.
The Memorable Moments Are Rarely the Loud Ones
Many of the sculptures allow for public interaction.
You can climb some of them.
Poses and pictures are always welcome.
It can be a noisy experience, but the most memorable moments typically happen at the Temple walk.
Couples come here to leave their marriage certificate after a divorce.
During the 2019 festival, the hat of a regular attendee was left behind.
His parents came to the festival to say goodbye to it.
All of the materials become part of the burning effigy on Saturday night.
There is complete silence when the Temple burns.
Up to 100,000 people can be there together in the quiet, allowing themselves to release whatever troubles might be in their life.
Pictures of the crazy costumes and impressive sculptures often dominate the coverage of Burning Man.
If you attend in 2020 or another year, look for the quiet moments too.
Those will be the ones you treasure.
